From Seersucker to Hickory Stripe

As the English began emigrating to the American colonies, the blue-and-white-striped seersucker from India made its way to the United States, where it became especially popular in the hot and humid American South. Its fabric is light, and its design was seen as stylish. Seersucker suits eventually became a staple in the closets of Southern gentlemen.

The seersucker design soon transformed into the hickory stripe. The blue stripes became dark blue, navy, or indigo, and the light cotton became a little more denim-like. It was still lightweight and started being worn by farmers, loggers, carpenters, and railroad men.

To keep railway employees distinct from each other, the workers and engineers wore hickory stripe uniforms – porters, conductors, and station masters were assigned three-piece blue uniforms with brass buttons.

The hickory-striped engineer cap is still in use today.
